Care: all the activities that take place to make, remake, maintain, contain and repair the world (Fisher and Tronto).

Carer: anyone, including children and adults, who looks after a family member, partner or friend who needs help because of their illness, frailty, disability, a mental health problem or an addiction, and cannot cope without their support. The care they give is unpaid (NHS England).

Care aesthetics: art that has the lived experience of care/caring apparent in the form and/or intrinsic to the production and meaning of the work (with a huge debt to Tobin Siebers).

Artist Carer Manifesto, Photogram on expired paper, 2025.

I think a lot about how much unpaid carers save the national economy - £445 million every day.

I wonder what would happen to the economy if we just downed tools and…stopped? I wonder what would happen to arts funding if we just downed tools and…stopped?

A lot of unpaid labour went into creating this manifesto, so please credit if you reuse or share. Thanks.
